Course Formats
Classes are offered in a variety of formats: in-person, online, hybrid, day and evening.
Textbooks
Most of our theatre courses use low-cost textbooks or no cost material provided by your instructors.
Please check Find-A-Class for formats and day/time class availability for all THE, THF, and THP courses. Courses are not offered every semester, so see the Theatre Advisor for best course sequence.
THE Classes may include
Introduction to Theatre
- A survey of theatre, including basic elements and principles of production, styles, and/or historical perspectives of theatre, dramatic literature, and criticism
Modern Drama
- Analysis of dramatic literature studied within political, historical, and cultural contexts and examined from the perspective of the playwright`s structure and style
THF Classes may include
Introduction to Cinema
- Survey of the history and development of the art of motion pictures, including criticism of aesthetic and technical elements.
Acting for the Camera
- Special technical aspects of acting before a camera.
Introduction to Television Arts
- History and development of electronic media and its impact on popular arts.
Contemporary Cinema
- A study of contemporary films, directors and critics with emphasis on evaluating film as an art form.
THO Classes may include
Makeup for Stage and Screen
- Purposes, materials, and techniques of makeup for stage and screen.
Musical Theatre Workshop
- Workshop in the study and performance of musical theatre repertoire. Includes audition techniques, stage directions, character role development, rehearsal techniques, vocal acting styles and vocal technique, stage movement, crew roles, and performance.
THP Classes may include
Acting I & II
- Fundamental techniques and terminology of acting through physical and vocal expression, improvisation, and monologue and scene work with emphasis on characterization.
- Fundamental techniques of acting through script analysis, rehearsal, and performance
Stage Movement
- Movement skills for the actor to develop a flexible, expressive physical instrument. Includes pantomime, physical isolation, and awareness exercises
Theatre Production I
- Designed to give college credit to the cast and technical production crews of college theatre productions.
Theatre Production Projects
- Designed to give college credit to the designers, stage managers, dramaturgs, and arts administrators of college theatre productions.
Introduction to Costume Construction for Theatre
- Introduction to basic principles used in costuming for theatre including the use of tools and techniques for costume construction, understanding of fabrics and materials, and a selected survey of historical fashion.
Introduction to Technical Theatre
- Procedures of technical theatre production and demonstration. Topics include design and construction of scenery, lighting, and properties.
Directing Techniques
- Contemporary theory and practice in directing, the evolution of present-day directing procedures, and a sampling of scripts for directing practice. Principles of script analysis, blocking, casting, rehearsing, and performing.
Introduction to Design Scenography
- The role of the theatre designer in creating scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and multimedia effects for stage productions. Elements of the design process and communication of dramatic themes and visions to the audience.
Voice and Diction
- Exercises and techniques to free the voice and improve projection, resonance, and articulation. Covers international phonetics alphabet and standard stage speech.
