Dual Enrollment FAQ

Earning College Credit While in High School

It is an opportunity for eligible high school students to earn lower-division college credit during their regular high school classes. The credits students earn through dual enrollment are treated the same as regular college credit. Students can apply the credits earned towards certificates, an associate’s degree and/or toward the AGEC within Maricopa Community Colleges and can be transferred to other Maricopa Community Colleges and Maricopa Transfer Partners.

Dual Enrollment works directly with specific high schools and their qualified/approved instructors during Fall and Spring semesters. Home schooled students would need to be registered as a student at the high school to be eligible for dual enrollment. Homeschooled students are eligible to take concurrent classes at the college, for more information go to Students Under Age 18.

Dual Enrollment classes meet at the high school during the regular high school day and are taught by college-certified high school instructors using a college curriculum and textbook. Concurrent enrollment classes meet at the college or online through the college and are not affiliated with high schools. Students need prior approval from their high school counselor if they want concurrent college courses to help satisfy high school requirements.

Dual enrollment classes are based on the grade students receive in the class; if they pass (with a grade of C or better), they earn the credit. Receiving college credit in AP classes is dependent upon earning an adequate score on the AP test at the end of the year.

Participating in Dual Enrollment

Students must have access to technology and the internet. All processes are online. Visit GCC's Register for Dual Enrollment. Contact your high school Dual Enrollment contact for details.

Dual Enrollment students must be attending a participating high school and all students under the age of 18 (AR.2.2.2) will be required to demonstrate college readiness for the purpose of admissions. This can be accomplished by self-reporting an unweighted, High School GPA of 2.00 or greater. Students unable to self-report a high school GPA of 2.00, will take free EdReady College Reading Placement Goal with a recommended score of 75 or higher. Some college classes require a specific placement test with minimum score. Refer to your high school Dual Enrollment class list for the specific college class prerequisite.

College course placement is different than college readiness. Refer to your high school Dual Enrollment class lists for specific college class prerequisites. You may also refer to the Maricopa Community Colleges college class placement guide. Our college utilizes EdReady for placement. This is a free, online tool that will be used for all college course placement testing. Log in with your MEID@maricopa and password to access.

Testing must be completed BEFORE the registration deadline. If you do not score the minimum on your first test, you can increase your score by clicking the View Study Path button to review and work on the material. You can Learn any topic, allowing you to access online courses directly from EdReady. Once you are ready, Test your knowledge to increase your score. Your performance on these Tests will update your EdReady score and your current status for the tested material. Once you reach the minimum score, send an email to dualenrollment@gccaz.edu.

Refer to your high school class lists under College Prerequisites.

Since you are already in the class, why not get college credit for it? You can save money through community college tuition rates and your textbooks are provided by your high school. Save time by finishing college classes early and gaining access to free college resources including the library, computer labs, tutoring and more.

Students can use AZTransfer's Course Equivalency Guide to determine how the Dual Enrollment class will transfer to ASU, NAU, and UofA. Also, students can use their high school class list to see if their Dual Enrollment class meets the Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) criteria.

Paying for Dual Enrollment

Refer to the Tuition & Fees webpage for current tuition costs. There is an additional $15 registration fee per semester for each college you register through. Note: tuition is subject to change.

Tuition assistance (Maricopa Grant) is available for those who qualify (income based and citizenship) but is not guaranteed. It is based on first-come, first serve and you must meet eligibility requirements. If you are not awarded tuition assistance, you will be expected to pay the full tuition amount or sign up for the official payment plan by the payment deadline. To apply for tuition assistance, students submit an online application by the deadline.

You can pay online or in person at the Student Business Services Office. For questions regarding payments, call GCC Cashiers office at (623) 845-3589, select option 4.

Failure to set up an official payment plan (payment plans are per college, per semester/term) or pay tuition in full by the payment deadline will result in students being automatically dropped, without notification, from their college class(es). You will not earn the college credit for your college class(es) and students will not be reinstated after the payment deadline.

It is the student’s responsibility to drop the class by the payment deadline. Email the GCC Dual Enrollment office at dualenrollment@gccaz.edu with your full name, college ID number, high school name, and the class you want to drop or change by the payment deadline.

After the payment deadline, withdrawals are processed by the instructor and are not subject to a refund. Please contact your instructor for the withdrawal.

This is the same day as the payment deadline.

Go to GCC Help Desk for links to Find Your MEID. For your college ID number: log into your Student Center with your MEID@maricopa.edu and password. Click Profile tab and ID number is listed on top left.

Think of your MEID as your username to access online services with the college. You will use this to log into your Student Center and access your student email. Example: ABC12345678@maricopa.edu is the full username. Your college ID number is used to identify your unique student account: if you call us about issues or call our Student Business Services to make a payment, this is the number you should have on hand so we can access your account as fast as possible. Here’s how to tell the difference between the two:

Your MEID will start with the first three letters of your first name, followed by seven numbers.

Your college ID number is eight digits and will always begin with the number 3.

U18 - this hold is removed once the parent/guardian completes the Financial Responsibility Form within the Next Steps form and the form is approved by a college staff member.

Special Admissions - this hold will stay on the student’s account until they turn 18 and will not prevent enrollment or ability to pay.

Blocked Services - Students with a debt over $100.00 on their account impacts enrollment, transcript request and graduation until the debt has been paid.

CHS - this hold, Currently Enrolled in High School, will stay on the student’s account until they graduate high school and prevents the student from using self-service for registration, it does not affect the ability to pay.

If a student does not remember their FERPA PIN, as a parent or guardian, they can guide their student to reset the PIN by following these steps:

  1. Log into the student center.
  2. Navigate to the profile tile.
  3. Look for the option FERPA PIN.
  4. Enter a new 4-6 digit PIN that is unique to you.

By following these steps, the student should be able to reset their FERPA PIN and regain access to their account.
