"The Power of Silence"
Presentation by Dr. Alexander Patrick-Rolando
11 a.m. - Noon | Student Union, SU-104E
"If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality" - Archbishop Desmond Tutu
The Power of Silence is a compelling presentation that explores the impact of silence in times of injustice and uncertainty. In a world increasingly defined by anxiety and unrest, this talk delves into the responsibility of standing up for what is just, even in discouraging times. It encourages listeners to find strength in hope, resilience, and in standing against injustice, rather than shrinking in silence. The session will also reflect on historical figures who maintained and built hope, while facing adversity, highlighting how courage and hope has shaped the world we live in today. The talk aims to inspire participants to carry forward the legacy of resilience, urging them to find their voice and continue standing up for justice in the face of uncertainty.
Tuesday, February 25
"Be the Change - Youth Lead Social Movements"
Presentation by Dr. Tamika Sanders
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. | Student Union, SU-104E
This presentation will explore the powerful history of youth-led movements that brought about significant social change. Young people have advocated for child labor laws, voting rights, civil rights, school desegregation, immigration reform and LGBTQ rights are just a few examples. Through their actions, the world has changed. Because young people often have the desire, energy and idealism to do something about the injustice they see in the world, they are powerful agents for change. Dr. Tamika Sanders will lead an interactive discussion on how students’ feelings of anger, sadness and hopelessness can be transformed into concrete actions that can make the world more equitable.
