If you have a passion for the environment and want to dedicate your life to improving the planet, then GCC is the perfect place to start making your dream come true. The Sustainability and Environmental Science degrees prepare you to solve environmental challenges during rapid global change. Students learn the foundational skills to be successful in a number of careers with exciting opportunities to continue their education as transfer students.

Students who choose a sustainability or environmental science degree pathway often find rewarding careers in government, education, research, public policy, and business.

Why Study Sustainability/Environmental Science at GCC?

With small class sizes and hands-on instruction by faculty who are experts in their fields, your introduction to these careers will build a strong foundation that serves you through the rest of your educational path. GCC students also have a number of campus-based opportunities to earn real-world experience in sustainability and environmental science. Students can work with faculty to participate in campus initiatives, including the Gaucho Urban Garden, Native Seed Library, and Bee Campus/Pollinator Pathway Program. Students can also join the GCC Environmental Club.

Degree Options

Sustainability Option

Our emphasis in sustainability provides students with an introduction to the broad field of sustainability. We emphasize the importance of linking environmental awareness to economic growth and equitable development. Students choosing this major often transfer to Arizona State University’s School of Sustainability.

Environmental Science Option

Our emphasis in environmental science provides students with the foundational science skills they need to be successful in their future careers. We emphasize data analysis and scientific techniques useful to solve problems in a changing global environment. Students choosing this major often continue their education through our signature 2+2 Program in Environmental Sciences with the University of Arizona.

2+2 Program with University of Arizona

Environmental scientists typically require a minimum of four years of study for entry-level careers. GCC has partnered with the University of Arizona to ensure students interested in environmental careers have a direct pathway to the education they need to be successful. GCC’s faculty work with faculty from UA to provide foundational science education and general studies that allow students to continue at UA after two years of study at GCC. Students have the option to earn an Associate’s Degree along the way! This degree can be completed in person or online, so you don’t even have to leave the Valley to realize your dreams.

GCC students in environmental science go on to specialize in many different areas at UA, including plant science, water resources, soil health, and more! Students graduate ready to begin careers as:
