Biography
Dr. Stephens is a new member of the GCC community as of 2020. She has been a community college instructor since 2006. Prior to coming to GCC, she taught at community colleges in Overland Park, Kansas and Columbia, Maryland. Dr. Stephens has a PhD in Art History from the University of Kansas and a BA and MA in Humanities.
She loves being the classroom, whether it's online or in person. She passionately believes that everyone can find art that matters to them in an art history class, and she loves being there when her students find new favorites.
When she's not teaching, Dr. Stephens likes to see art and architecture in person, and she is willing to go to extremes to do so. For example, she took a Frank Lloyd Wright walking tour in Chicago in December when the temperature was 10 degrees. And, after 20 years of regretting not going to see the Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake when she was a college student in Utah, she finally made the pilgrimage in 2019. It is hard for her to pick a favorite work of art or favorite artist because it seems that whatever she's teaching at the moment is what she wants to see in person.
