Bio

Biography

Dr. Jennifer Lane has been a residential faculty member at GCC since 2003. She teaches a variety of English courses as well as HON190 and HON201. Dr. Lane says, "In each of my classes, I make every effort to provide examples illustrating how concepts apply in the 'real world.' College students may not yet have a defined career path, but writing, critical thinking, and logical reasoning are primary tools that will determine success in school and beyond the classroom. Although some believe that writing is a mystical activity that people can perform only because of some natural, inexplicable talent, I hope to convey that writing is a process that can be learned by any motivated and determined person. Similarly, critical thinking and sound reasoning are not always things that come easily, but these are all skills that can be acquired through careful practice which we will be doing in class. I strive to make every class valuable for students."

In addition to teaching a variety of courses, Dr. Lane most recently served as the Faculty, Director for the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Engagement. Previously, she also researched and published on topics related to community college honors programs, underrepresented populations, and service-learning/civic engagement. Dr. Lane has received the NISOD Excellence Award for Teaching and the MCCCD Diversity Advisory Council Award as well as the League for Innovation in the Community College's Innovation of the Year Award, and she was named a Fellow of the National Collegiate Honors Council, one of the first community college representatives to receive this distinction. Through the Maricopa Institute for Learning Research Fellowship, she examined the impact of civic engagement on student learning. Additionally, Dr. Lane serves in the community in various ways such as on the Governor's Commission for Service and Volunteerism, with National Charity League, Inc., and as a Flinn-Brown Fellow. Through this service, she was awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award.
