Bio
Biography
With a deep respect for the transformational nature of education, George is proud to be a community college educator. His passion is to inspire others through integrity, empathy, collaboration and courage to boldly make the world more equitable through inclusive access to quality higher education.
As a first-generation college student, George's interest in science led him to complete undergraduate and graduate degrees in Chemistry. In 1992, he and his friends co-founded a successful educational software development business in Phoenix where, in various leadership roles, he coordinated the development of software that sold millions of copies in multiple languages. In 1996, as Vice-President of Product Planning and Development of a second educational software company, he oversaw strategic product planning and product acquisitions while taking the company public in a successful NASDAQ IPO.
In 1998, George began working in Africa in a non-profit community development NGO, conducting and publishing linguistics and language development research to promote access to education and literacy among endangered, minority people groups. He later led significant organizational transformation while serving in senior leadership roles, including as Regional Director and Director of Strategic Planning of the organization's efforts on two continents. He directed diverse teams, mentored new leaders, developed funding networks, negotiated memoranda of understanding with national partners, managed operational budgets and million-dollar grants, and chaired several committees in executive leadership, board governance, sustainable capacity building, and strategic planning for projects across multiple countries.
In 2006, George returned to Arizona to be the primary caregiver for his aging parents. He began teaching Chemistry with the Maricopa County Community College District in January 2007, where he has taught thousands of Chemistry students in over a hundred Chemistry course sections. In 2014, George earned an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from NAU, with an emphasis in Community College Leadership. His capstone project focused on Organizational Change related to Open Educational Resource development and implementation. As a Principle Investigator on a Maricopa Millions OER Development Grant, he developed free instructional materials that have collectively saved GCC's General Chemistry students hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Since Fall 2020, George has also served as GCC's Director of Strategic Planning while providing leadership to key strategic planning, accreditation, sustainability, and employee engagement committees for the college. He served as Interim Dean of Academic Affairs for the 2022-2023 academic year, overseeing six academic departments and two academic support departments during the development and implementation of the college's first Baccalaureate degree.
In his spare time, George enjoys being a life-long learner, taking college courses and workshops for personal and professional development, volunteering in science outreach in the community, reading, gardening, and spending time with friends and family. He is always thinking of new ways to innovate to promote student success.
