Bio

Biography

I first got excited about Chemistry because I loved cooking and my mom said that cooking and Chemistry are similar. My high school required me to do a service project, so I decided to tutor students in math and chemistry, which was one of the best experiences of my life. At that point, I decided I wanted to be a teacher. I am a first-generation college student, and I had the privilege of working two jobs to save enough money to go to college.

I got my bachelor's degree in Chemistry from UC San Diego and my Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. While I was doing education research I was the Chair of the Chemical Education Division at Texas Tech University, but a desire to teach students rather than do research attracted me to GCC.

In my free time I enjoy doing Lapidary -  the practice of shaping stone, minerals, or gemstones into decorative items.  My other hobbies include bike riding, hiking, scuba diving, home renovation and traveling with my wife Stacey.
